From training as a lawyer in London to monitoring the progress of the media’s shift to digital for American mass media company Fox Corporation, Abigail Slater has had an impressive career, which she talks about with Jim O’Brien on his podcast “The Political Life.”
During the 30-minute podcast, the Dublin-born Slater describes her journey to the U.S., which includes stints at the Federal Trade Commission, the Internet Association, and the National Economic Council at the White House. Her focus through the years was on a variety of issues including antitrust law, national security, and Internet-related concerns such as privacy and data security.
Slater told O’Brien her main focus as Senior Vice President for Policy and Strategy at Fox is to watch what the industry is doing in terms of digitizing and to track copyright issues.
One example of Slater’s work was being part of a group working on legislation meant to close “the streaming loophole.” This effort made the illegal streaming of content a felony, and it passed into law at the end of 2020. It will help original content creators, both large and small, Slater said.
“The Political Life” podcast, which explores guests’ stories about their involvement in the political world, is available on various platforms including Spotify, Google, and Apple podcasts.
Host Jim O’Brien has his own government relations firm, The Connecticut Group, LLC, and has worked in government and politics for 25 years.
